DAYS 65 - 66
The Rhine Gorge between Bingen & Koblenz
Date: Thursday 14 June
Weather: Shitty
Mileage: 4320 by the time we get there.

Another quite long drive up to our chosen spot in the famous Rhine Gorge. We picked a village off the map called Bacharach, guided by Tripadvisor. It turned out to be lovely. Really nice drive in improving weather. Walk around the village and straight into a wine tasting venue. They sell wine by the glass at 100mls, in the club our standard glass was 125mls. They overfill each glass, to about 125mls, and so after we have tasted quite a few we are rat-arsed. Notwithstanding we move to a restaurant opposite our hotel (shorter stagger home) where we wait for ever for a bowl of meatballs. We fall in with a crowd of Aussies who are also waiting for ever to get served and the evening progresses exactly how you might think it would. Right laugh! We even told them of our next planned trip which would be Malaysia, the Philippines, Bali and Australia.

At the end of the evening the traditional exchange of addresses was insisted on by our new Aussie mates. You MUST come and visit us!!! They were a little put out when Mrs H and I explained that we are not in the habit of travelling even five miles out of way to visit people we have only known for three hours at most, and that when we were as pissed as parrots. They did not appreciate our faultless logic - so we gave them false names and addresses and threw theirs away.

Just a few shots to show the beauty of the Rhine Gorge

DAY 66
Wander round a Gorge
Friday 15 June
Weather - overcast
On the Thursday I was so taken with the place the first night I suggested that we stay three nights, not the two planned. I was over-ruled by the management, and quite right too. The next day we got up early to see overcast skies and damp streets. We trudged down and boarded a Rhine Cruise boat for a trip downstream to St Goar and promised castles. We duly got off and trudged round a castle. We then decided to hop on a train to the fabulous city of Koblenz. Cobblers more like! Back on the rattler to our home of Bacharach to be saved by the twin joys of sunshine and a Wine festival in the next tiny village up a side valley just a hop skip and a trudge away.

We like a wine tasting - and so the inevitable happened - inevitably. But we enjoyed ourselves.
